The athletics fraternity is mourning the death of former Kenyan 3,000m steeplechase athlete Jairus Birech Kipchoge, who passed away.
Jairus passed away on Thursday at around 8:30 PM.
News of his death was shared by Jordan Guenther, an American superfan of Kenyan athletes, who relayed a message from Birech’s family.
In a social media post on September 19, Guenther shared a message from Birech’s family stating:
“It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we, the family of Jairus Kipchoge Birech (KapKitiyo), former 3,000m steeplechase athlete, announce his passing.
“May the Lord grant him eternal rest and peace.”
The family has asked for prayers and support during this difficult time as they come to terms with the great loss.
Kenyans Mourn Jairus Birech
Kenyans have taken to social media to mourn Birech, sharing emotional tributes to his friends and family.
On Facebook, Jacob Kirui wrote:
“My deepest condolences to the family of the late Jairus. This news finds me in shock. A friend I personally knew—we even traveled abroad together the same year we began our careers as athletes—is no more. Go well, brother, till we meet again and sing with the angels, where there will be no death anymore. To the family, may God grant you comfort and strength in this difficult time.”
Another user, Wesley Chepkwony, reflected on Birech’s remarkable athletic career, saying:
“This one hurts. This guy was lethal in 2015. He ran the world lead that year. During the World Championships in Beijing, he controlled the pace and ensured Kenya secured a 1–4 finish.”

About Jairus Birech
Jairus Kipchoge Birech, born on December 14, 1992, in Kenya, was one of the nation’s most talented steeplechasers. Over the course of his career, he left an indelible mark on athletics, rising to the top ranks of global competition.
Birech won the Diamond League Final once, became an African champion, and secured a Commonwealth Games silver medal, among other accolades. He also reached the top 8 at the World Championships, cementing his place among the world’s elite runners.

His personal best in the 3,000 metres steeplechase, an extraordinary 7:58.41 set on September 5, 2014, remains one of the fastest times ever recorded in the event. Beyond the barriers, he excelled in flat races too, recording 7:41.83 in the 3,000 metres and an impressive 1:00:33 half marathon in Milan in 2019.
Birech’s versatility extended to road races, where he clocked 27:52 in the 10km at New Orleans and showcased endurance across multiple distances throughout his career.
