Jamhuri High School is one of the top county secondary schools located in Nairobi and stands as one of Kenya’s oldest and most historic learning institutions.
Located in Ngara, Nairobi, the school traces its origins back to 1906 when it was established as a Railway Educational Centre during the British colonial era.
Initially named the Government Indian School, it primarily catered to Nairobi’s Indian community. In 1955, it was renamed The Duke of Gloucester School, in honour of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester.
Following Kenya’s independence in 1964, the school adopted the name Jamhuri High School—”Jamhuri” being the Swahili word for “republic,” reflecting the country’s newfound sovereignty and national pride.
Over the years, the school has embraced a diverse student population, enrolling learners of African, Indian, and European descent. Commonly referred to as “Jamu” by students and alumni, the school also retains the nostalgic nickname “Dukes”.
Today, Jamhuri High continues to be a key player in Kenya’s academic and cultural landscape, carrying forward a legacy over a century in the making.
