Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor has revealed what killed Rex Kanyike Masai, the 21-year-old protestor who was shot dead by a police officer during the Anti Finance Bill protests in Nairobi CBD.
An autopsy conducted at the City Mortuary, revealed that Rex died due excessive blood loss caused by a gunshot wound to the left thigh.
“The young man shot while demonstrating died due to excessive bleeding and muscle fractures caused by one gunshot wound on the left thigh.”
“The bullet entered from the back and exited, probably he was shot while running away,” said Dr. Oduor.
Present during the exercise was Rex’s family, Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), and Haki Africa, a Pan-African human rights organization.
Rex Masai Is Shot
Rex was allegedly shot by a police officer on Thursday 20th June 2024 within the Central Business District, Nairobi
Video footage circulating online showed the events leading up to the fatal shooting which reportedly occurred at around 7 PM in the evening.

In the video, a crowd of protestors were seen fleeing from police officers, who were trying to dispersing the group.
Moments later, a plain clothed police officer believed to be responsible for Rex’s death is seen pulling out a gun and firing indiscriminate shots at the group of youth.
It was here amidst the chaos that a bullet pierced Rex’s leg causing him to bleed out.
Preliminary reports indicated that he spent more than 20 minutes trying to seek medical attention before being rushed to Bliss Medical Centre along Moi Avenue where he died while receiving treatment.
ODPP Issues Directive to IPOA
Following his death the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on June 21 issued a statement regarding the fatal shooting incident.
In the statement, the ODPP issued a directive to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) urging it to carry out thorough investigations into the matter.
“Pursuant to the provisions of Article 157(4) of the Constitution, the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to carry out thorough and comprehensive investigations into the matter,” said the ODPP.

Additionally, the policing authority was also asked to forward the resultant inquiry file and report to the ODPP within 21 days.
“Thereafter, the resultant inquiry file together with the report should be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) not later than twenty-one (21) days from the date hereof.”
Also, the ODPP reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law while discharging its constitutional mandate.
