A family in Machakos County has joyfully reunited with their keen after being away for seven years. Benard Kathumbi was admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in 2017 as an unknown African Man (UAM) following a grisly road traffic accident (RTA).
In a statement, the Kenyatta National Hospital on October 4, 2024, recounted a day filled with both tears and joy, as Benard was reunited with his family in Kithyoko, Machakos County.
“After being discharged in July 2020, he had nowhere to go, leading the KNH team to relocate him to the Mercy Servants of the Poor Charitable Institution, overseen by Sister Mary Musembi,” the KNH statement read in part.
In addition, KNH cited, “Four years later, the heartfelt reunion with his family became a reality.”

Sister Musembi’s Aid
Sister Musembi shared that she posted Kathumbi’s photo on the Musyi FM Facebook page. Benard was recognized by a compassionate individual who then contacted his family. The family then reached out to the station and were connected to sister Musembi.
“I did my part by caring for him with dignity, and I urge his family to continue with that care,” she said.
Haron Baracha, a Senior Medical Social Worker, KNH, reflected on Kathumbi’s journey, from his admission to the hospital to the day he was taken to his new home.
“I am thrilled that he has finally found his family. He came to us in critical condition, and although he received treatment, it was unfortunate he had nowhere to go afterward, and that is how we brought him here,” he noted.
Furthermore, Kathumbi’s family, led by his 76-year-old father, Mr. Nyumu Mutua, recounted their years of looking for him without success.
“I am overjoyed to find my son alive and healthy,” Nyumu said. At the same time, he expressed his gratitude to the KNH management for their care.
Additionally, he extended his gratitude to Sister Musembi for hosting Kathumbi during his recovery.
