The Judiciary has rolled out a plan to establish specialized sexual and gender-based violence courts across the country Chief Justice Martha Koome has said .
Speaking on Tuesday when she addressed 2nd annual national conference on criminal justice reforms in Naivasha, Koome said the establishment of the special courts is among projects being undertaken by the justice system to protect vulnerable members of the society against sexual and gender-based violence.
Already the first special court has been established at the Shanzu Law courts in Mombasa.
To ensure that sexual and gender-based violence cases are handled efficiently, the Chief Justice revealed that the Judiciary has engaged medical professionals to conduct a gap-analysis study to inform key policy directives .
At the same time the CJ lauded the National government for setting up the policare programme which streamlined the engagement of police officers in the areas of investigations and prosecution
She however noted that much needs to be done to guarantee justice to children, mentally ill persons, and other vulnerable groups who seek redress from the criminal justice system
The conference is organized by the National council on the administration of justice.
