Nominated Senator, Karen Nyamu has issued a warning to club owners in Nairobi after she raised alarm on an excessive partying trend known as ‘Aluta’.
Senator Nyamu who spoke during an interview with a local radio station said the trend was more popular among the youth, adding that it was dangerous to the society.
“Kuna kitu inaharibu vijana hapa Nairobi inaitwa ALUTA. Hio form me ndio nitaichoma,” Karen Nyamu stated.
This is loosely translated to ” there is a growing party trend in Nairobi that is negatively impacting the youth known as Aluta. I will ban it.”
“Club owners this is your notice,” Karen Nyamu warned.
Furthermore, she forewarned that if the excessive partying trend continued, the country would lose on the youth’s potential to grow the economy.
“We will lose a whole generation,” Karen Nyamu stated.
Likewise, the nominated senator said she will act on her warnings, adding that she would soon table a statement for the ban to the Senate.

Aluta Trend
Aluta is a parting trend that has gained popularity in recent times. The trend is used by club owners and DJs to keep revelers in clubs partying throughout the weekend.
Similarly, there is another partying trend that runs from early Sunday mornings all the way to Sunday late afternoons known as Aluta Sundays.
Notably, Aluta is a sheng word which means “to feel good”. It is always associated with the use of certain psychoactive and stimulant drugs such as weed/Bhang and Khat.
Alcoholism Among the Kenyan Youth
According to a past survey by the National Authority for Campaign Against Drugs (NACADA) Nairobi region has the highest prevalence of alcohol use disorders at 18.4 percent.
Further, in May 2023, NACADA cited the prevalence of alcohol and drug abuse amongst the youth revealing that 12 percent of Kenyans of about 15 years drunk alcohol.
The percentage translates to 3,199,119 people.

Due to this, the government has been at the forefront in curbing alcohol consumption among youth in various parts of the country.
As such, Nairobi governor, Johnson Sakaja announced an increase in levies imposed on alcoholic drinks and licensing in October 2023.
“On alcoholic drinks and licensing, every single participation session proposed a raise because of the sprawling nature of these establishments,” Governor Sakaja stated in a press briefing.
He added that the move was meant to reduce the cases of alcoholism in the country, noting that the young people were getting into alcoholism in large numbers.
