KDF Confirms Shortlisting of Specialist Officer Candidates, Reveals How Cadets Will Be Selected

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has confirmed the shortlisting of Specialist Officer candidates for its 2025 recruitment exercise, which will take place at the Kenya Military Academy in Lanet, Nakuru.

In a statement on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, KDF announced that the shortlisted candidates, representing a range of professions including engineering, medicine, and media, will undergo rigorous assessments to determine their suitability for enlistment as Specialist Cadet Officers.

These assessments will include verification of documentation, comprehensive medical checks, physical fitness tests, and evaluations of professional competency in the coming days.

Chief Recruiting Officer Brigadier Samuel Kimani stressed the importance of the recruitment process, stating that it aims to maintain high standards and foster a new generation of defense leaders equipped to tackle Kenya’s evolving security needs.

He urged all participants to act with integrity and follow the established rules.

“I encourage everyone involved in this exercise to uphold the highest levels of integrity and strictly adhere to the regulations in place. The KDF does not condone, and will not tolerate, any form of recruitment malpractice. Any such incidents will be addressed accordingly,” he stated.

Recruitment Chief Coordinator Brigadier Alphonce Ndar echoed these sentiments, reminding candidates to avoid shortcuts and highlighting that every step in the recruitment process assesses both character and capability.

The announcement of the shortlisted Specialist Officer candidates came months after the KDF unveiled a nationwide recruitment drive on September 15, which was set to commence in October 2025.

This campaign invited qualified Kenyan citizens to apply for various positions within the military, including General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets, Specialist Officers, General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen/women, and Defence Forces Constables.

For the General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets and Specialist Officer positions, applicants applied online via the official KDF recruitment portal at https://recruit.mod.go.ke, while recruitment for General Duty Recruits and Defence Forces Constables was conducted in person at designated centers.

General Eligibility Requirements During Recruitment

Citizenship & Identification

– Must be a Kenyan citizen with a valid National ID.

– Candidates must present original documents along with four copies of:

– National ID

– KRA PIN Certificate

– Academic Certificates

Age Limits

– 18–26 years: GSO Cadets (Regular & Graduate), General Duty Recruits

– Not above 30 years: Specialist Officers, Tradesmen/Women

– Not above 39 years: Chaplains/Imams

– Candidates should not have a criminal record.

Physical Standards

– Minimum Height:

– Men: 1.60m (5’3″)

– Women: 1.52m (5’0″)

– Minimum Weight:

– Men: 54.55kg (120 lb)

– Women: 50.00kg (110 lb)

Minimum Academic Qualifications

 For General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets – Regular

 – KCSE Mean Grade of B (Plain)

 – Training: 3 years, leading to a BSc in Defence & Security Studies

For GSO Cadets – Graduate

 – Must meet the Regular GSO Cadet requirements

 – Must hold a Bachelor’s degree in relevant disciplines

 – Training: 15 months
