Kenya has been elected to chair the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) committee on Tourism and Competitiveness.
This big victory reaffirms Kenya’s position as a leader in the global tourism industry.
The announcement which marked an historic moment for Kenya was made at the inaugural committee meeting held at the UNWTO headquarters in Madrid, Spain
After two rounds of voting, Kenya emerged victorious over two strong contenders Thailand and Malta, securing the position that involves very critical decision making on the global tourism sectors.
The Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua noted that the win is a testament to Kenya leadership capabilities.
“This is a historic moment and an important win for Kenya as it puts us in a position of decision making in matters that affect tourism across the globe.
“This vote demonstrates the confidence that UNWTO member states have in Kenya’s leadership and ability to steer the organization’s agenda on tourism competitiveness,” said CS Mutua.
In a statement, CS Mutua highlighted the role of tourism as a key pillar of the Kenyan economy, adding that by chairing the committee, the country will get synergy with UNWTO members.
Further, the CS added that this collaboration will foster the shaping of policies, building partnerships and promoting the best practices in tourism.

“We shall champion initiatives that will help in the creation of jobs, protecting of the planet as well as driving inclusive growth that can be felt and be impactful within communities,” he added.
Tourism Win for Kenya
The Executive Director of UNWTO Zoritsa Urosevic, congratulated Kenya on its remarkable achievements in the tourism sector as well as bagging the chance to chair the committee.
Zorita also expressed confidence in Kenya’s ability to effectively lead the UNWTO committee.
“I commend Kenya for its commitment to sustainable tourism development. As one of the important tourism economies in Africa.
“Kenya will bring valuable experience and expertise that will lead the Committee’s work in enhancing competitiveness and responsible tourism across UNWTO member countries,” Urosevic said.
Nonetheless, Kenya’s successful bid was led by Wausi Walya, a Public Relations and Corporate Communications Manager at the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB).
He was appointed as the designated technical officer and center person for the technical committee by the Ministry.
The country’s bid has showcased pillars of competitiveness, including diversified tourism offerings, sustainable practices, destination marketing, cultural and natural heritage, skills development programs as well as technology among other strengths.

In addition, the bid highlighted Kenya’s infrastructural developments in the areas of roads, airports and hospitality which have unlocked the growth potential for the sector.
Consequently, UNWTO Committee not only serves as a platform for members states but also enhances the competitiveness of their offering, promoting innovation and ensuring sustainable worldwide growth.
Kenya chairmanship will span three years from 2024 to 2027. It will provide a significant opportunity for the country to shape the future globally by collaboration and strategic leadership.
