The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has announced that electricity token purchases through M-PESA will be temporarily unavailable.
In a statement on September 20, Kenya Power stated that the disruption will be on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 12:30 AM to 3:30 AM due to a scheduled Safaricom system upgrade.
During this period, Kenya Power Paybill numbers, including 888880 for token purchase and 888888 for postpaid bill payments, will not be available.
“Safaricom has announced a planned M-PESA system upgrade in the early morning of Monday, 22nd September 2025 (Sunday night), which will affect M-PESA services between 12:30 AM and 3:30 AM. During this period, Kenya Power Paybill numbers, including 888880 for token purchase and 888888 for postpaid bill payments, will not be available,” read part of the notice.
Additionally, the electricity company advised customers to use alternative channels for purchasing tokens and paying bills.
These include Airtel Money, DTB Bank, NCBA Bank, Family Bank, Co-operative Bank, KCB, I&M Bank, National Bank of Kenya, and Equity Bank, accessible via USSD codes or mobile apps.
The company encourages customers to purchase electricity tokens in advance of the scheduled maintenance to avoid any inconvenience.
“We appreciate your patience and understanding,” ended the statement.

How to Buy Kenya Power Tokens Without Using M-PESA Paybill
If M-PESA Paybill is unavailable, you can still purchase Kenya Power tokens through alternative mobile money platforms, banks, or online channels.
1. Airtel Money
- Dial *334# on your Airtel line.
- Select “Paybill” from the menu.
- Choose KPLC as the biller and enter the business number (available on the Airtel menu or Kenya Power website).
- Enter your meter number as the account number.
- Input the amount you want to pay and confirm.
2.Equity Bank
- USSD: Dial *247#.
- Mobile App/Online Banking: Use the Equity Mobile App or Equity Online portal.
- Equitel: Navigate to the “My Money” section.

3.KCB Bank
- USSD: Dial *522# or *844#.
- Mobile App: Use the KCB Mobile App or KCB iBank.
- Agents: Visit the nearest KCB Bank agent for assistance.

- Visit www.kplc.co.ke.
- Go to the Self-Service section from the homepage.
- Select Prepaid Services (Token).
- Click on the Buy Token option.
- Enter your meter number in the required field.
- Input the amount you wish to purchase.
- Confirm and complete the transaction.
