Kenya Railways Corporation has announced plans for significant railway infrastructure developments to support the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.
In a public announcement on January 14, Kenya Railways said the decision was due to Kenya’s successful joint bid with Uganda and Tanzania to host the continental tournament.
The Government of Kenya is prioritizing transport solutions to ensure smooth movement during the event, which will feature matches at Talanta Sports City Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.
“In Kenya, the games will be hosted at Nyayo National Stadium, Talanta Sports City Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Nyayo National Stadium is designated as a training centre during the tournament because of its central position.”
According to Kenya Railways, one of the key initiatives is to construct a railway station adjacent to Nyayo National Stadium and to introduce a new railway spur line from Nairobi Central Station through the Nyayo Stadium area and Kibera, terminating at Talanta Sports City Stadium.
The project is designed to guarantee commuters safe, reliable, and affordable transport options, reducing congestion and improving accessibility to match venues.
The corporation added that the upgrades will provide an effective transport solution, ensuring easy access to and from stadiums for fans, officials, and teams.

The move aligns with the government’s broader preparations to host a successful tournament and enhance Nairobi’s urban mobility.
Kenya Railways Warns Encroachers
To facilitate construction, Kenya Railways has issued notices to all encroachers along the proposed railway corridor, advising them to vacate the land to allow paving and station development.
The corporation warned that any illegal structures or property remaining on the corridor will be demolished without further notice, with costs borne by the encroachers.
“To this end, all encroachers were advised and issued with notices in good time to vacate the railway corridor to pave way for construction of the station and spur line. Kenya Railways is in the process of evicting all encroachers as we repossess all the land that has been identified for the above mentioned development. Therefore, take note that any illegal structures or property found on the corridor will be demolished and/or removed without further notice and at the encroacher’s risk and cost.”
The corporation reiterated its commitment to completing the project on time to meet AFCON 2027 deadlines.
Boost for Sport Lovers
Kenya Railways has assured the public that the new infrastructure will not only serve AFCON 2027 but also remain a long-term asset for Nairobi’s transport system.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service and integrate it with other urban transport modes.
The planned railway enhancements are expected to ease traffic pressure on Nairobi roads during the tournament, which will attract thousands of visitors from across Africa.
By linking key stadiums to the city’s commuter rail network, the government aims to provide a seamless travel experience for fans and participants.
AFCON 2027 will mark the first time Kenya co-hosts the prestigious tournament since its inception, signifying the country’s growing role in African sports.
Further details on timelines and project costs will be communicated in subsequent updates from Kenya Railways and the Ministry of Transport.
Kenya Railways concluded by urging compliance with relocation notices to avoid disruptions and legal consequences.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will take place from June 19 to July 18, 2027, and will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, marking the first time three East African nations have jointly organized the tournament.
