With just a few hours remaining before the deadline for filing 2024 returns, Kenyans have taken to the internet to express frustration with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) iTax portal, with many reporting error messages and access issues.
A section of Kenyans also reported being unable to log in or reset their passwords, adding to the growing frustration.
Some users shared screenshots of the error page they encountered while trying to access the KRA iTax portal.
Meanwhile, others pointed out that they were not receiving the OTP (One-Time Password) messages required to log in or complete verification.
The error message read: “An error has occurred,” followed by an error reference number for users to quote when seeking assistance.
“Problem encountered in iTax. Please contact the KRA call centre at the contact details below and quote the above Error Reference No for resolution.”
The message included contact numbers and an email address, urging users to report the issue.

Kenyans Report KRA Portal Errors Just Hours Before Filing Deadline
Media personality Lindah Ogutu took to her X account to allege that the KRA contact numbers provided were not picking up calls amid a system traffic issue.
“KRA Corporate and KRA Care, the systems are down. Then the contact numbers you’ve given are not being picked, or you’re kept on hold for about 20 minutes. You should know we don’t even have the money to pay penalties. Please, fix your system!” she wrote.
Journalist Ali Manzu urged the authority to act, posting, “Kindly work on your systems.”
Another user, Gravin Okeyo, expressed his frustration, writing, “How do you expect me to file returns when your systems are unresponsive? I can’t even change my password. Kindly help.”

Mutuma Muriungi added, “Hey there, I’ve sent a request for a password reset. I’ve been waiting for it in my email, but it hasn’t come through yet. Kindly help.”
Ahaz Matuku chimed in, saying, “Why are your systems so down? I’ve tried multiple times this morning but keep getting an error. Kindly work on the effectiveness and efficiency of your systems.”

Ricko Pats raised a broader concern, posting, “Why can’t KRA just respond to all these cries by Kenyans and give a clear position? Silence isn’t helping!”
“Just explain why the system is down or inaccessible and what measures are being taken to enable tax filing. We’re wasting a lot of time receiving error messages from iTax. Not fair!”
Fred Mwania also voiced his disappointment, stating, “Your online systems appear to be non-functional. I’m unable to log in or receive the necessary verification codes due to ongoing glitches, making it impossible to file my returns electronically. Could you please provide guidance on this?”
KRA is yet to respond to the issues raised by Kenyans regarding the system outage and the errors experienced
Whether you’re employed, self-employed, a small business owner, a student, a farmer, or recently unemployed, filing your tax return is not optional—it’s a legal requirement that carries consequences if ignored.
Failure to comply can result in penalties, even if you have no income to declare.
