The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued new guidelines on the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations for private students.
In a statement, KNEC noted that the review of guidelines on the administration of the KCSE examination to private candidates was as a result of the challenges experienced in previous years.
“The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has reviewed the guidelines on administration of the KCSE examination to the private candidates owing to the challenges experienced in previous years,” reads part of the statement.
The council announced that all private candidates would sit for the examination in their respective county headquarters whereas a section who registered for group IV subjects with a project component would continue undertaking their projects in their respective sub-counties as has been the practice.
These include those who registered for Art Design (442); Agriculture (443); Woodwork (444); Metal work (445) Building Construction (446); and Computer Studies (451).
“All private candidates will sit their KCSE theory papers in their respective county headquarters,” stated the council.

KNEC Issues New Guidelines
The council further, added that Sub- County Directors of Education (SCDEs) will be responsible for ensuring that the candidates successfully undertake the projects.
“The SCDES will therefore remain responsible for ensuring that the candidates undertake the projects, that the scores are uploaded within the stipulated timeframes and that all documents are submitted to KNEC,” noted the examination body.

Likewise, the County Directors of Education (CDEs) in liaison with the SCDE in the county headquarters shall put in place all the required logistics, including identifying appropriate venues where the private candidates will sit for their KCSE examination.
Further, KNEC directed the CDEs and SCDE to avail information on the host centers by 30th July 2024.
“Communication on the host centers identified should reach KNEC by 30th July 2024,” directed the council.
Lastly, the council stated that all prison centers were exempted from the above guidelines.
Prior, to this KNEC had asked parents and guardians whose children are sitting for national examinations in 2024 to ensure that they are registered before the March 29th, 2024, deadline
Through a notice released on March 22, the council was categorical that it will not extend the deadline once it elapsed.
“Are you a parent/ guardian of a candidate sitting KPSEA or KCSE in 2024? Have you confirmed if your child has been registered and their data accurately captured?” read the statement in part.

KCSE Registration Deadline
KNEC opened the registration for national exams on January 29, 2024, and notified institution heads.
In the notice, the council advised teachers to ensure all candidates are successfully registered within the period, warning that the registration window will not be extended.
“Avoid last minute rush and register all your candidates now. The dates must be adhered to since there will be no late registration of candidates,” the notice read.
Nonetheless, KPSEA exams are set to begin on October 28 to October 31, 2024, while KCSE exams are set to start from November 4 to November 22, 2024.
