The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has issued new directives to all principals regarding Grade 10 learners in Senior School.
Online registration is now a key requirement in the rollout of the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) system aligned with Competency-Based Education (CBE).
The directive comes as part of measures to standardize and streamline the transition into the new Senior School framework, where only properly registered institutions will be allowed to enroll learners into the assessment system.
Principals are therefore required to complete the registration process within the set timeline to ensure their schools are fully integrated into the national assessment structure.
Online Registration Process for Assessment Centres
KNEC has instructed school heads to access the registration through the official portal for submitting institutional details.
Schools are required to log in using their current school codes, which serve as both the username and password, before proceeding with registration.

Upon initial access, principals must update their official phone numbers, which are used to generate a One-Time Password (OTP) for secure verification.
The OTP allows access to the registration system and ensures that only authorised school administrators complete the process.
Once verified, schools enter their institutional details and upload the required documents, including the school registration certificate.
The system then processes the submitted data and generates a Universal Centre Code for each institution.
This code uniquely identifies the school as an approved assessment center under the national framework. A School Registration Slip is also generated, which principals are required to download and print for official records.
Strengthening Alignment with CBA and CBE Reforms
The directive is part of broader reforms by KNEC to ensure full alignment between Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) and Competency-Based Education (CBE).
The new system emphasizes assessing learners based on skills, competencies, and applied knowledge rather than traditional examination methods.
KNEC has indicated that registering schools as assessment centres is a foundational step in implementing the Senior School structure effectively.
The process ensures that all participating institutions meet required standards and are properly mapped within the national assessment database before learner registration begins.

KNEC Registration Timeline and Institutional Compliance requirements
According to KNEC, the online registration portal opened on 7 May 2026 and will close on 22 May 2026.
School heads have been urged to complete all registration requirements within this window to avoid missing out on the next phase of learner enrolment into the system.
Once the registration window for assessment centres closes, only approved and verified institutions will be enabled to register Grade 10 learners under the Senior School system.
Institutions that do not currently hold a KNEC examination or assessment code have been advised to seek guidance through their respective Sub-County Directors of Education (SCDEs).
Alternatively, they may contact KNEC directly via [email protected] for assistance regarding eligibility and registration procedures.
