A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) seeks to train lawyers who are exposed to different spheres of transdisciplinary knowledge and who understand the social, political, and economic contexts in which the law operates. Students who want to pursue law at public institutions can secure a place through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
The course is structured around four key thematic areas: Financial and Commercial Law; Human Rights, Democracy, Governance and Law; Environmental Law; and International Law.
Graduates who wish to practice as Advocates of the High Court of Kenya must, upon earning the LLB degree, proceed to the Kenya School of Law (KSL) for a one-year Advocates Training Programme under the oversight of the Council of Legal Education (CLE).
Successful completion of this training leads to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Law, which is a mandatory requirement for admission to the bar.
However, many aspiring lawyers fail to secure admission to their dream universities, largely due to the competitive cut-off points set by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
To qualify, candidates must first meet the minimum entry requirements and understand the subject cluster requirements and the cut-off points used in placement.
The first cluster includes English or Kiswahili, both of which are critical for communication and legal interpretation. Strong performance here is essential, as the law heavily relies on language skills.
The second cluster draws from Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, or General Science, where a candidate must pass at least one subject.
