The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced traffic disruptions on two major roads, extending the closure of a section of Eldoret Road in Nairobi while introducing a temporary disruption along the Mlolongo-Kamulu (Quarry Road) corridor to facilitate ongoing construction works.
In a public notice on Setpember 28, KURA said the closure of Eldoret Road, which was initially scheduled to end on September 18, 2026, has been extended until 6pm on December 30, 2026.
The authority said the affected section has remained closed as work continues on the construction of a vehicular bridge across the Nairobi River.
According to KURA, the extension became necessary after unforeseen logistical and site-related challenges slowed progress on the project.
The authority cited delays in the delivery of critical construction materials and equipment that were beyond the contractor’s control.
KURA said both the authority and the contractor remain committed to completing the project within the revised timeline while maintaining the required safety and quality standards.
Motorists using the corridor have been advised to continue using the designated alternative routes and to follow directions provided by traffic police officers and marshals stationed in the area.
“KURA regrets any inconvenience this may cause and thanks the public for their cooperation as we continue working to transform urban mobility,” the notice read.
Eldoret Road Closure Extended
The latest extension means motorists who had expected normal traffic flow to resume in September will have to contend with diversions for more than three additional months.

KURA indicated that existing traffic management arrangements will remain in place throughout the extension period as work continues at the Nairobi River crossing.
The authority also apologized for the inconvenience caused by the prolonged closure, saying the project is aimed at improving mobility within the city and enhancing road infrastructure in the area.
The bridge project forms part of efforts to improve movement across sections of Nairobi that experience heavy traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours.
Meanwhile, KURA has also announced a separate traffic disruption along the Mlolongo-Kamulu (Quarry Road) corridor.
The disruption will take effect from October 1, 2026, and remain in force until December 1, 2026, to allow contractors to undertake essential construction works on the affected section of the road.
KURA Announces Designated Alternative Routes
To minimize disruption, KURA has provided alternative routes for different categories of vehicles during the construction period.
Light and medium vehicles will be diverted through Syokimau-Katani Road and Syokimau-Parliament Road, while heavy commercial vehicles will use Tufoam Road.

Motorists travelling through the area have been urged to exercise caution, observe all traffic signs and comply with instructions issued by police officers and traffic marshals deployed along the route.
The authority noted that the temporary disruption is necessary to ensure the safe and efficient completion of the planned works.
KURA said the measures are intended to balance the need for continued infrastructure development with the need to maintain traffic flow on one of the key corridors serving the fast-growing eastern edge of Nairobi and neighbouring Machakos County.
The simultaneous disruptions on Eldoret Road and the Mlolongo-Kamulu corridor are expected to affect thousands of motorists in the coming weeks, particularly commuters who rely on the two routes for daily travel.
With construction activities expected to continue through December, road users have been encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra travel time and use the designated diversion routes to avoid unnecessary delays.
KURA maintained that the projects are necessary to improve road connectivity, safety and mobility, adding that traffic management measures will remain in place until the works are completed.
