The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has responded to public outrage over images and video footage showing a lion at a garden destination in Karen that appeared malnourished and injured.
The footage sparked widespread concern about the animal’s welfare, prompting calls for immediate action.
In a video seen by The Kenya Times, the lion was captured walking slowly and appearing frail at Stedmak Gardens.
According to online reports, the garden caretakers were approached by concerned people but gave no answers on why the lion appeared in that state.
“A video was shared of a lion which shares an enclosure (less than 100 m^2) with 5 other lions, and it looked to be injured and very malnourished,” shared Kenyan Vigilante on X.
“The caretakers seem least bothered, and when approached and asked regarding the lion’s current state, they brushed it off and refused to answer,” he added.
KWS Clarifications on the Viral Lion
In response to the viral footage and public uproar, KWS veterinary team leader Dr. Bernard Rono issued an update confirming that the lion, named Lamu, has been receiving treatment for progressive spinal nerve degeneration, a condition he has been managing since 2020.
“Lamu continues to receive treatment for progressive spinal nerve degeneration, a condition he has managed since 2020. His therapy includes gentle walks to support his recovery, like rehabilitation practices for humans with spinal injuries,” the statement confirmed.
“Despite his condition, Lamu remains under constant monitoring, and all other animals at Stedmak Gardens are in good health,” he added.

According to the statement, the 22-year-old lion was rescued from an orphanage in 2012 and has lived significantly longer than the typical lifespan of lions in the wild, which ranges between 12 and 16 years.
Additionally, KWS assured the public that it is committed to ensuring animal welfare is addressed.
“Together with our partners, we remain dedicated to upholding the highest standards of care, conservation, and protection of Kenya’s wildlife,” KWS added.
