The Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki, Kenya, has been identified as the site of the proposed plan by the United States government to set up a quarantine facility for its citizens exposed to Ebola during the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Kenya granted the US access to land at the military installation, where a quarantine unit is expected to be established and operated by American personnel.
The United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps has confirmed that it is deploying a team of highly trained officers to Kenya to support the care, monitoring, and quarantine of American citizens departing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Location, Access and Surrounding Areas
Laikipia Air Base, also known as Nanyuki Air Base, is a Kenya Air Force installation located about eight kilometres west-northwest of Nanyuki town in Laikipia County.
The base lies along the A2 highway, a major road linking Nairobi to northern Kenya, and sits at an altitude of about 1,865 metres above sea level.

It is surrounded by key landmarks including Nanyuki town, which lies just north of the Equator, and Mount Kenya to the southeast.
The area is also known for wildlife conservancies such as Ol Pejeta and Sweetwaters, which attract tourism and conservation activity.
Neighboring counties include Nyeri, Meru, Isiolo, Samburu, and Nyandarua, placing the base in a central, well-connected region.
Access to the base is mainly by road from Nairobi, a journey of about three to four hours. Nanyuki also has a civilian airport that handles domestic and charter flights, although entry to the military installation is restricted and requires official clearance.
US Ebola Quarantine Plan
The proposed facility at Laikipia Air Base is intended to isolate American citizens who have been exposed to Ebola but are not showing symptoms.
According to reports, the medical team set to be deployed includes doctors, nurses, laboratory specialists, mental health professionals, and engineers, as well as personnel who handled the 2014–2015 Ebola outbreak in Liberia.
All staff have undergone specialized training in protective equipment, quarantine procedures, and treatment protocols.
The unit will be staffed by the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, a uniformed medical service.
Officials from the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps say the facility is part of a strategy to prevent Ebola cases from entering the United States.
Individuals who develop symptoms are expected to be transferred to specialized facilities in other countries rather than being taken directly to the US.

History of the Air Base
The Laikipia Air Base was established in 1974 as Nanyuki Air Base, and was later renamed following changes in the Kenya Air Force’s structure.
The site has roots dating back to World War II, when it was used by the Royal Air Force, and later to the 1950s, when it was used in anti-Mau Mau operations.
Over time, it has developed into Kenya’s main fighter air base, hosting key aircraft including F-5 fighter jets and Hawk training aircraft used for combat training and air defense operations.
Personnel, Command and International Cooperation
Laikipia Air Base is operated by the Kenya Air Force, part of the Kenya Defense Forces, and hosts fighter pilots, air defense units, engineers, technicians, and training personnel responsible for air operations and national defense.
The Kenya Air Force is currently commanded by Major General Bernard Waliaula, while the base itself has been under the leadership of Brigadier Mohamud Farah.
The base is also a centre for international military cooperation, hosting the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK), which trains thousands of British troops in the region each year and maintains a permanent presence near the base.
Joint training exercises involving Kenyan forces, British troops and other international partners, including the United States, are regularly conducted in the area.
These exercises focus on combat readiness, peacekeeping and coordination in regional security operations.
