President William Ruto is launching former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship.
The event, currently ongoing at State House has seen several heads of states and dignitaries attend.
Among the Heads of State present at the event include President Samia Suluhu of Tanzania, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Salva Kiir of South Sudan.
Burundi Prime Minister General Gervais Ndirakobuca and James Kaberebe, Minister of States for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Rwanda are also in attendance.
Other key leaders include former Nigerian President Olesegun Obasanjo and former Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete.
Kenyan leaders, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, CSs, and other politicians, also graced the event.
Mudavadi Roots for Raila
Speaking during the event, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign CS Musalia Mudavadi thanked President Ruto for supporting Kenya’s bid for the AUC Chairmanship.
Mudavadi explained that the position has the potential to change Africa’s governance, integration and development agenda.
He stated that Raila’s leadership and Pan-African vision resonates with Africa’s collective aspirations.
The Prime CS added that Raila has tirelessly championed the course of Africa’s unity and advocated for leaders to think about Africa above everything else.
“His intellect, dedication to Africa’s integration, his focus on unity and development are precisely what the AU needs. As a long-standing African Pan-Africanist he has always espoused the idea that Africa must come first and that our continents future lies in our ability to unite and act collectively,” Mudavadi said.

African Candidate
He emphasized that Raila is not just Kenya’s candidate but an African candidate since his candidature is rooted in the belief that the continent’s progress must be driven by its people.
He said Raila will prioritize taking AU to the people and make it work for the citizens of Africa.
“Indeed, Raila is a Pan-Africanist who has emerged at the right time to drive Africa’s transformation,” he said.
Mudavadi explained that the unveiling of Kenya’s bid indicates that the government is confident Raila will make the best AUC chairmanship.

Other Candidates
In his last update about the AUC bid, Raila announced that he will quit local politics and focus on his campaign for the Chairmanship.
Raila will face Djibouti Foreign Affairs Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Anil Kumarsingh Gayan from Mauritius and Richard Randriamandrato from Madagascar in the race for AUC Chairmanship.
The Election of Senior Leadership of the AUC will be held in February 2025 in accordance with decision of the Ministerial Executive Council.
