The Aga Khan University (AKU) stands as a beacon of excellence in education, particularly renowned for its commitment to nurturing top-tier journalists.
On Saturday, February 17, the University held a graduation ceremony where 159 students graduated in its Nairobi Campus, among them some renowned journalists in the country.
Among those that graduated today are Nation Media Group journalists including, Harry Misiko, Brian Ocharo, Caroline Wafula and Zeynab Wandati all of whom now hold master’s degrees in digital journalism.
Others are Citizen TV’s Sam Gituku, Yvone Okwara, Yusuf Ali, John Allan Namu of Africa Uncensored and former Citizen TV’s editor Francis Gachuri.
Faith Sudi (BBC), Macharia Wamugo of TV47, and Mildred Chebet Wanyonyi of BBC Africa were also conferred with the master’s degrees.
Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu and Princess Zahra Aga Khan were among the chief guests who graced the event as the students celebrated the fruits of their labor in pursuit of the degree.
Donning their green gowns, the students stepped into the institution’s graduation square with excitement and enthusiasm written all over their faces.
They shared some bright moments in jubilation of their achievement, with top names including Yvonne Okwara and John Allann Namu- among others taking selfies to capture the important milestone they had reached.
Sharing on their social account, the university announced the graduation that was capping a historic 40th anniversary for the institution.
Aga Khan Remarks on Graduating Students
In her remarks, Princess Zahra Aga Khan said, “2023 was an exceptional year in which AKU’s growth was evident through multiple initiatives. We launched undergraduate medical education in Nairobi and undergraduate nursing education in both Nairobi and Dar es Salaam to educate the healthcare leaders who are needed throughout East Africa.”
On his part, CS Machogu lauded the institutions for maintaining high standards in its programs, noting it had proven that it stands for high standards.
“I know what the Aga Khan University stands for. It stands for high standards, access based on merit and service to society,” Machogu noted.
The Aga Khan University expressed its appreciation for the 2024 media graduates, signaling the start of a new chapter in their professional journey.

“Caps off to a new chapter. Congratulations to the Executive master’s in media leadership and Innovation Graduates! We look forward to your continued success,” the institution stated.
Social media platforms buzzed with congratulatory messages, with TV 47 acknowledging Francis Gachuri, their editorial director.

TV47 in a statement said, “Cape Media Group Editorial Director Macharia Wamugo graduates with a master’s degree in media leadership and Innovation from Aga Khan University… Congratulations boss!!”
The Nation Media Group also joined in celebrating their new master’s graduates.

These recent graduates join a distinguished list of alumni, including Kenyan BBC Journalist Peter Mwangangi, Citizen TV’s Jamila Mohamed, and Julian Kamau.
The journey through AKU’s master’s program involves rigorous training and specialized coursework tailored to each journalist’s interests, be it investigative reporting, multimedia journalism, or other specialized fields.
