When Mary Moraa touched down at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport after a grueling season in the 2023 Diamond League Final, she had no inkling of the heartwarming surprise awaiting her.
As the other passengers disembarked, all Kenyan athletes onboard were asked to remain. Little did they know that something extraordinary was about to unfold as their curiosity piqued.
The orchestrator of this surprise was none other than Richard Lagat, a former volleyball player for Kenya Volleyball Federation National League Champions, the General Service Unit.
Lagat, now a coach is the man who melted the heart of 800m queen Mary Moraa. The former player had a precious parcel in his possession that he was determined to deliver to his beloved.
Moraa Caught by surprise
His best friend, entrusted with the special delivery, handed Lagat the key to his heart—the engagement ring.
Finally, with the crowd buzzing with excitement, Lagat took a knee, holding the ring aloft.

The moment had come. Amid the throngs of spectators and her fellow athletes from the 2023 Prefontaine Classic held in Eugene, USA, Lagat’s placard declared, “Will You Marry Me?”
The world 800 m gold medalist, caught completely off guard, had only one answer: yes!
Moraa, beaming with delight, stated, “Nothing can express what I am feeling now. It’s a wonderful night. Let those who had hopes know that the chapter is closed.”
Richard Lagat, known for his soft-spoken nature, shared his excitement, saying, “I am happy she said yes! She is an amazing girl, easy to be around, cheerful, humorous, and a good dancer.”
The duo’s love story began in 2021 during the National Police Service pass-out parade in Embakasi, where, as Lagat put it, “It was love at first sight.”
Lagat, having been a player and now a coach in volleyball, understands the challenges athletes face and has been a steadfast supporter of Moraa’s journey.
He took the opportunity to commend Moraa for her exceptional achievements this season, acknowledging her hard work.
Tough Season
While their love story soared to new heights, Mary Moraa’s athletic career faced its share of challenges. She nearly withdrew from the two-day Prefontaine Classic after falling ill upon arriving in the United States.
