Former Chief Justice David Maraga has appointed veteran political analyst and communications strategist David Makali to his 2027 presidential campaign team as a Communications Coordinator.
According to the campaign statement dated July 20, Makali will be responsible for coordinating communication efforts, managing media relations, and helping shape the campaign’s public messaging as Maraga seeks to strengthen his presence ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“United Green Movement Presidential Flagbearer, Chief Justice (Emeritus) David Maraga, announced today the official establishment of his Presidential Campaign Secretariat in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, headed by two senior officials: Ms. Mkawasi Mcharo and Mr. David Makali. As the Co-Executive Director of the Presidential Campaign Secretariat,” part of the statement read.
In 2027, David Maraga will contest the presidential seat under the United Green Movement Party (UGM).
David Makali Career and Achievement
Makali joins the campaign with more than 30 years of experience in journalism, communications, public affairs, and political analysis.
Over the years, he has become a familiar voice in Kenyan politics through his work as a journalist, editor, media executive, and television analyst.
During Makali’s career in the media, he has held senior positions in mainstream and alternative media.
Makali was imprisoned in 1994 for his journalistic work and was recognized as an Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience.

In 1999, Makali was abducted and tortured following the publication of an investigative report that touched on powerful interests.
Throughout his years in journalism, Makali focused on issues related to governance, corruption, human rights, and public accountability.
Makali has served as Managing Editor of the Sunday Standard, Head of Content at Radio Africa Group, and worked as an editor and media consultant.
In 2025, the Kenya Editors’ Guild honored him with the Freedom Warrior Award.
Academically, Makali holds a Master of Science degree in Journalism from Columbia University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Nairobi.
Makali further holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Moi University.

Mkawasi Mcharo Joins Maraga’s Campaign Team
On the other hand, Mkawasi Mcharo is a Kenyan writer, educator, commentator, and diaspora advocate, and is currently handling Strategy, Policy, and Diaspora affairs in the 2027 presidential campaign for the former Chief Justice, David Maraga.
Mcharo has publications on governance, identity, migration, citizenship, race, and the political participation of Kenyans abroad in Kenyan and international media.
Mcharo is a founding member and former Chair of the Kenya Community Abroad, based in the United States.
During her tenure as the Chair of the Kenya Community Abroad, Mcharo contributed to the establishment of dual citizenship and initiated the first Kenya Presidential Debate.
Ms. Mcharo holds a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Theatre Arts from Hunter College in New York, a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Diplomacy from Norwich University in Vermont, and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from the University of Nairobi.
