Lecturers and staff from Moi University had been on strike for long, before the nationwide strike which has since been suspended.
Moi University lecturers recently joined their counterparts from other universities on strike, which began on September 18 but was later called off on September 26 after Labor Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua intervened.
After the nationwide lecturer’s strike, Moi university lecturers resumed with their internal strike which also included the Moi university staff.
Students at the university claim that the hostels are dirty, and the campus has not been properly cleaned following the strike of casual workers.
The Kenya Times spoke to a Moi University student to inquire about the situation in the institution.
“If the administration knew they were not going to pay the lecturers and workers they could have told us to remain home instead of coming to school.
Moi University’s current situation
“We are tired of staying calm for a month now we are entering a new month with no solution,” the student explained.
The student also alleged that the university has remained mum about the situation.
“The situation isn’t looking good and there are no hopes from the administration. We comrades are tired of waiting yet there is no feedback apart from being to stay calm,” the student alleged.
Additionally, students at the institution are expressing concern over the shortage of condoms, especially at a time when they may be tempted to engage in sexual activities due to the lecturers’ strike.

This situation has left students idle, potentially increasing their exposure to infections.
Following the shortage of condoms at the institution, the university issued a memo admitting there is a crisis while also calling on students to exercise caution, a copy of which Kenya Times is in possession of.
Students decry shortage of condom
“This is to inform you that currently there is no supply of condoms to the health facilities around,” part of the statement read. The administration cautioned students as follows:
- Abstain if you can.
- Be faithful to one trusted partner.
- If No.1 & 2 above are humanly impossible, buy protective from commercial outlets.
- Always keep yourself busy with other worthwhile activities.
Furthermore, the students say the lecturer’s strike has taken a toll on their academic progress.

“As we watch our academic progress stall, many of us are grappling with anxiety about our future and the value of our education.
It’s disheartening to see the institution we trust fail to prioritize our needs, leaving us questioning not only our current situation but the commitment of those in charge to our academic success,” a Moi University student said angrily.
There are also claims that there are two cohorts that have finished their studies and still have not graduated, with no updates on when that will happen.
For the students at Moi University, their hope is that the administration will arrive at an amicable solution so they can resume their studies.
