Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria was forced to leave an event he was attending after some attendants turned hostile towards him.
CS Kuria was forced to leave the funeral of politician Maina Wanjigi on Friday, June 5, 2024, after his speech was cut short by some mourners attending the burial who started chanting anti-Ruto slogans.
Kuria was among politicians attending the burial of the former Kamukunji Member of Parliament (MP) and father to politician Jimi Wanjigi.
In a video seen by The Kenya Times, a tense atmosphere erupted after a section of mourners begun to chant anti-Ruto slogans while the CS took to the podium to make his speech.
Despite initial attempts to continue, the disruption caused by the escalating chants made it impossible for him to proceed.

“In the history of this country the place of Maina Wanjigi is cast in stone and not just because of contemporary politics as we know it. I remember the generation that worked with Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and especially the people who laid the foundation stone for the economy including people like Maina Wanjigi and the institutions that they built,” Kuria remarked.
Moses Kuria Cornered with “Ruto Must Go” Chants
As the CS continued to address his remarks about Wanjigi, a “Ruto Must Go” chant is overheard in the background catching the attention of some of the mourners, forcing Kuria to temporarily pose his speech.
Suddenly, some of the mourners become persistent with the chants which lead to the CS abruptly cutting his speech.
“Ahsanteni sana, Thank You!” said Kuria before politician Jimi Wanjigi got back on the podium.

The chants, aimed at President William Ruto, underscored underlying political tensions within the region.
However, security personnel swiftly intervened to ensure Kuria’s safety, escorting him away from the scene as the situation grew more volatile.
This led to the funeral being momentarily halted before resuming.
The incident was not an isolated case of Kuria facing hostility from Kenyans during public gatherings.
Back in June, the CS received cold reception at another burial ceremony as some mourners begun to leave immediately after he took the microphone to address the congregation at a funeral in Miruka, Kandara, Murang’a County.
Maina Wanjigi laid to rest
Former cabinet minister Maina Wanjigi was laid to rest on Friday at Kianjoya Estate in Nyeri Town Constituency.
The former MP was pronounced dead on June 28, 2024. passing on at the age of 92 years while receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.
He served as an MP for current Kamukunji Constituency for over 25 years before his retirement from politics.
During his tenure as a Minister, he held Cabinet positions ranging from Minister for Public Works, Agriculture, and Tourism.
The former MP takes credit for initiating and developing the expansive and famous open-air Gikomba market in his Constituency.
