A fierce critic of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni’s administration has been blocked from travelling to Germany from Nairobi. In a statement dated Saturday, May 24, 2025, renowned Ugandan human rights activist, Stella Nyanzi, said that she has been denied re-entry into Germany by the German ILO in Nairobi.
“As a Ugandan refugee in Germany, I’m shocked that I have been denied re-entry into Germany by the German ILO in Nairobi called Constatine,” she wrote.
“Not only that, but Constantine has also denied me permission to board Etihad Airways this evening at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport,” read part of her statement.
Nyanzi added that Constantine claimed she is not officially recognized as a refugee in Germany, despite her presenting a positive decision letter from the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (BAMF), the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, which affirms her refugee status in Munich. Constantine reportedly argued that no final decision had been received regarding her asylum application.

Further, the activist argued that since her flight departed, she will have to wait for Constanine’s communication at the German embassy.
“My flight departed. My 3 children are waiting for me at home in Munich. My taxi returned to Nairobi. I checked out of my BnB. I have a weekend of waiting to see this Constantine at the German embassy. I hate the dehumanization of being a refugee who must first beg to go home!” Nyanzi said.

Nyanzi’s ordeal comes days after a similar situation ensued, whereby hundreds of refugees from the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya who were to travel to Germany as part of resettlement plans were returned to their camps.
This move came after the German government paused all new resettlement submissions until further notice.
The refugees who were in Nairobi for 3 weeks awaiting their departure protested the move, saying they had sold all their property in anticipation of greener pastures in Europe.
