Mystery Smoke Without Fire from Container Sparks Panic

Authorities are investigating a mysterious incident in Likoni, where a container started emitting a huge mystery smoke without any fire on Thursday, January 23, morning. 

The smoke, which raised alarm among workers and nearby residents, forced immediate action from emergency responders.

Moreover, the contents of the Boss Freight Terminal Limited container, located off Mbaraki Road near Mbaraki Wharf remain unknown.

Also, local residents living near the terminal have expressed worry, noting the potential risks posed by the unknown cargo.

What is Known So Far About the Mystery Smoke

Firefighters responded swiftly to the scene, inspecting an open section of the container and spraying water inside to manage the situation.

Although there was no visible fire, the smoke had been billowing continuously, prompting the company to isolate the container from others as a precaution to prevent potential damage.

Preliminary theories range from a chemical reaction within the container to possible issues with the storage conditions of the cargo.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. However, detectives are focusing on determining what caused the smoke and whether there is any risk of further incidents.

Also, the identification of the contents of the container is a priority for the investigation team, to determine any potential risks to residents and workers who may have inhaled the smoke.

Updates are expected in the coming days as the investigation unfolds.

Fuel Leak in Mombasa

In a separate incident in April 2024, authorities were forced to evacuate residents of the Saba Saba area in Mombasa County following reports of a leaking fuel tank at a petrol station. 

Mombasa County Fire Department responded and evacuated motorists around the area and a multi-agency team was deployed to the area to conduct inspections and investigations as the station remained temporarily closed.

The leaking tanker was reported to hold more than 30,000 litres of super Petrol.
