Residents of Saba Saba area in Mombasa County were evacuated from the area following reports of a leaking fuel tank at a petrol station in the locale.
According to Mombasa County Chief Fire Officer Ibrahim Mossefat, an attendant at the petrol station noticed the leak of fumes that may have begun on Tuesday, April 16.

“The teams collaborated with the owner of the station to evacuate people from around the station as super petrol is one of the most inflammable gases, to avert the looming disaster.
“Makupa Police Commander called me yesterday and told me there was a loud bang heard from this particular petrol station, and upon reaching here they discovered smoke coming from the tanker,” Mossefat indicated.

Details of the Leaking Fuel Tank at Petrol Station
The leaking tanker was reported to hold more than 30,000 litres of super Petrol.
Furthermore, the investigating team established that the tanker’s fume conductor was faulty and repaired it to prevent further leaks.
“My team managed to cover the space where the lid had been removed, to prevent more oxygen from getting in which facilitates burning because the capacitor was already burnt,” added Mossefat.
In addition, the local police commander recommended that residents steer clear of the area until the authorities provide clearance for safety reasons. This, he noted, would allow the tanker workers sufficient time to address the issue.
