The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) on September 23 issued a warning to social media influencers and content creators about posting content that promotes drug and substance use.
In a statement, NACADA said such content, often aimed at younger audiences, undermines efforts to combat drug abuse.
“We have noted with concern the growing trend where social and digital media influencers, as well as content creators, are posting content that promotes the use of drugs and substances. This content, often directed at young audiences, poses a significant threat to the fight against alcohol and drug abuse and undermines efforts to protect vulnerable groups, especially children, from harmful influences,” the statement read.
Additionally, the Authority called upon the influencers and content creators to stop using their platforms to normalize or glorify drug use.

At the same time, NACADA reminded the public of the legal repercussions of promoting drug abuse.
“The Authority reminds the public that promoting drugs and substance use through social media is not only irresponsible but is also a violation of the law. Under the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act, 2010 (ADCA) and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act, 1994, promoting, advertising, or encouraging drug use is illegal and punishable by law,” the statement read.
