Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway have been warned of traffic disruptions this weekend due to planned road closures to accommodate the Nairobi City Marathon.
In a notice issued on June 5 ahead of the event, the closures will take effect at 10 pm on Saturday, May 6, 2026, and remain in force until 2 pm on Sunday, May 7, 2026.
Traffic on the Nairobi Expressway will be suspended in both directions between James Gichuru Road and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from Saturday at 10 pm until Sunday at 3 pm.
On Waiyaki Way, only the inner lanes on both sides will be affected. The closure will cover the stretch from Nairobi School up to the entrance of the Expressway and will run from Sunday at midnight until 10 am.
List of Nairobi Expressway and Other CBD Roads to Be Closed This Weekend
Motorists along Uhuru Highway should expect disruptions, as both directions between Lusaka Roundabout and Museum Hill will be closed from midnight on Sunday until 4 pm.
At the same time, Kenyatta Avenue will be closed between Panafric Hotel and Moi Avenue during the same period.
Haile Selassie Avenue and Processional Way will be shut between Cathedral Road and Uhuru Highway from Sunday midnight to 4 pm.
According to the notice, City Hall Way and Simba Street will be off-limits to motorists from Sunday midnight to 2 pm.
Other routes expected to be affected include Moi Avenue and Koinange Street. Koinange Street will be restricted between University Way and City Hall Way, while University Way will be unavailable between Uhuru Highway and Slip Road.

About the City Marathon
The fifth edition of the Nairobi City Marathon will take place on June 7, 2026.
According to the organizers, the 10km race has emerged as the most popular category in Sunday’s Nairobi City Marathon, attracting 6,550 of the 17,450 registered participants.
The half marathon (21km) follows with 5,050 runners, while 4,100 participants have signed up for the 5km Family Fun Run. The full marathon (42km) has drawn 1,750 elite and competitive runners.
The fourth edition of the race was held on July 6, 2025, producing new champions who set faster times than the previous year.
Benson Tunyo Murkomen won the men’s race in 2:08:36, while Emily Chepkemoi claimed the women’s title in 2:22:45.
