The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has shortlisted 183 police officers for promotions.
NPSC in a statement on Thursday, October 24 announced that the interviews for 183 police officers set for promotions have commenced after completion of the Higher Training Course and Senior Training Course.
These courses are designed to prepare officers, currently serving in the rank of Chief Inspector, for leadership roles in the Kenya Police Service, the Administration Police Service, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to NPSC, the goal is to ensure that police training delivers the requisite leadership and managerial skills that will ensure that the National Police Service provide World class policing.
“In line with this provision, the Commission is pleased to announce the interviews for 183 police officers who successfully completed the Higher Training Course and Senior Training Course. The interviews kicked off on Tuesday, 22nd October 2024 and will go on until Tuesday, 29th October 2024 at the Commission offices at CBK Pension Towers,” the statement reads.
The selection for officers attending these courses is determined by respective NPS Promotion Boards in line with guidelines provided by the Commission, ensuring that only deserving candidates are nominated based on merit and service record.
The rigorous training is conducted at the National Police Service training campuses in Kiganjo and Emali.
NPSC shortlists police officers for promotions
The candidates will be assessed on governance issues, financial management, communication skills, ethics, leadership and management and general police work.
In addition, NPSC will consider other criteria including academic qualifications, and discipline.
The Commission however noted that the promotions are not automatic as officers must demonstrate competence and readiness to assume higher responsibilities.

Based on the Commissions assessment, officers who may not meet the requisite standards and fail the interview, may not get promoted.
“In accordance with the National Police Service Commission (Promotions) Regulations, 2015, undergoing promotional training does not automatically entitle an officer to promotion. Instead, the training shall be considered alongside other requirements for the position in which promotion is desired,” the statement adds.
“This ensures that promotions are based on a holistic evaluation of qualifications, merit, and other established criteria, not just on the completion of training.”
In addition to this process, the Commission said that it plans to publish in the Kenya Gazette all officers promoted in this category.
Gazettement
The gazettement means these officers will be assigned higher responsibilities in the Service within or above the sub-county Command level.

The officers will further be subjected to a different disciplinary process conducted by the Commission through a special disciplinary committee.
They will also have the authority to conduct disciplinary processes for officers within their jurisdiction through the sub- ordinate disciplinary committees.
At the same time, the gazettement will grant them the privilege to communicate on matters within their jurisdiction.
Finally, it will broaden the officers’ opportunities to serve in other senior positions in government.
NPSC has revealed that the promotions will add to the 515 Chief inspectors promoted since 2019 when the current Commission assumed office.
The Commission said that 417 officers from the Kenya Police Service and 98 officers from the Administration Police Service benefitted from the trainings and ultimately secured promotions.
This number comprises 290 officers promoted in 2019, 63 in 2021, 162 in 2022 and 162 in 2023.
