The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has announced leadership changes within its management, appointing Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias is appointed as the Acting Managing Director and CEO, effective September 19, 2025.
In a statement dated Friday, September 19, 2025, KETRACO’s Board of Directors said the decision followed consultations with various stakeholders.
“The Board of Directors, in consultation with the Chief of Staff & Head of Public Service and the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Energy & Petroleum, wishes to inform the general public of the appointment of Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias as the Acting Managing Director/CEO of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Ltd (KETRACO) with effect from 19th September 2025,” the notice read.

At the same time, the Board thanked the outgoing Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Eng. John Muoki Mativo, for his service and contribution to the company.
Mativo was appointed in April 2023 by then-Energy CS Davis Chirchir on a three-year renewable contract.
“The Board of Directors would like to appreciate the outgoing Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Eng. John Muoki Mativo, for his invaluable service and contribution to the Company. We wish him well in his future endeavors,” the statement added.

Before the leadership changes were announced, the outgoing CEO appeared to have prior knowledge of the move.
In a statement dated Friday, September 19, 2025, accompanied by photos of him being interviewed by various media outlets, Mativo highlighted his achievements during his tenure.
“It’s been a great pleasure sharing my experience and vision to expand the high-voltage grid to ensure Kenya and the region have reliable and adequate power for both present and future needs — a grid that guarantees Kenyans access to cheaper green energy. For God and Country,” he said.
About Kipkemoi Kibias
Eng. Kibias is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in the power sector. His expertise spans power system design and construction, system planning, operations, maintenance, and renewable energy.
Before his appointment, he served as KETRACO’s General Manager for System Operation & Power Management.
He previously worked at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) in several capacities, including Regional Manager, County Manager, Design & Construction Engineer, and in power system planning, operation, maintenance, and regional coordination roles.

Eng. Kibias holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), an MBA in Strategic Management from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, and a Master’s degree in Nuclear Power Plant Engineering from KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (KINGS), Ulsan, South Korea. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Energy Studies at Moi University.
He is registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya as a professional engineer, is a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), and serves as a committee member of the Federation of African Engineering Organization (FAEO) Nuclear Committee.
