The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) issued a restoration order to Kettle House Bar and Grill in Lavington on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
In a statement, the authority cited public complaints about noise pollution from the bar located along Muthangari Drive as the reason for the action.
“Kettle House Bar and Grill in Lavington along Muthangari Drive was today issued with a Restoration Order on noise pollution. This followed complaints by members of the public regarding excessive noise emanating from the facility,” the statement read.
NEMA further directed the bar to present an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license, an annual environmental audit report, and noise pollution control measures within seven days of receiving the order.

Kamau Pharis, a Facebook user, accused the government of being hypocritical for focusing on bars while other institutions continue to cause noise pollution unchecked.
“While numerous churches, matatus, and other outlets create a racket and ruckus using loudhailers, megaphones, and horns… nobody bothers to stop the rogues! This is just extortion, shaking down those who can’t fight back,” Kamau wrote.
Another user, Francis Ng’ang’a, expressed skepticism about NEMA’s decision against the bar. “This is just PR,” he commented.

Similarly, Cyrus Ombati voiced concerns about the enforcement of the order. He claimed to have passed by the bar early on the morning of Thursday, January 9, and reported that loud music was still playing.
“I have passed there now. The music is loud and messy. There is a hospital nearby. Please send a team to check and take action now,” Ombati urged.
However, Naimapei Kaikai praised NEMA’s decision to issue restoration order to the Lavington bar.

NEMA intensified its crackdown on noise pollution. On October 21, 2024, under the directive of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale, the authority ordered the immediate closure of Fay’s Bistro, a popular club along Nairobi’s Ring Road in Kilimani, due to excessive noise levels following numerous public complaints.
This action came just a month after Quivers Club Kilimani announced its decision to stop playing loud music following a public uproar.
