The National Police Service has revealed the final moments of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Ong’ondo Were, before he was shot dead.
In a statement dated Thursday, May 1, 2025, the Police Service stated that at around 7:30 a.m., the politician’s white Toyota Crown came to a stop at a red traffic light on Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout. A motorcycle carrying a rider and a pillion passenger then pulled up alongside the car, and the pillion passenger fired shots at the passenger side, where Were was seated.

“The pillion passenger approached the vehicle and fired shots at the passenger side before jumping back onto the motorcycle and speeding away,” read the statement.
Last Moments of MP Ong’ondo Were
According to the Police Service, after the shooting incident, the politician’s driver and bodyguard—both of whom escaped unhurt—managed to rush the Kasipul legislator to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Furthermore, the NPS stated that the nature of the politician’s untimely demise appeared to be both targeted and premeditated.
“At this stage, it is too early to provide further details. Senior police commanders and detectives are at the scene, piecing together the circumstances surrounding the death,” the National Police said.

Additionally, the National Police Service extended its deepest condolences to the MP’s family, parliamentary colleagues, and constituents, and promised to conduct a thorough investigation into his death.

Colleagues who camped night at Lee Funeral also revealed some of the last moments they spent with Were before he met his untimely demise.
Kabondo Kasipul MP Eve Obara said that she spent time with the MP the whole afternoon of Wednesday and had tea with him. She also said that she sat with him at Parliament and left him at around 7:00 p.m.
“I am in total shock and I can’t even find the right words to mourn. It’s like I am in a dream world because I spent the whole afternoon with him . We went together for tea came back sat again in parliament and I left him at around 7: 00 p.m to be called by my driver through his driver that your friend has been shot,” Obara said.
Leaders Eulogize Kasipul MP
Following the legislator’s death, several political leaders have conveyed their messages of condolence to the family.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga said, “We have lost a gallant son of the soil! Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were is no more—mercilessly and in cold blood, gunned down by an assassin in Nairobi this evening. Rest in peace, Hon. Sir Charles Ong’ondo Were!”
Speaker Moses Wetang’ula said, “It is with profound shock and unspeakable sorrow that I have this evening received the devastating news of the fatal shooting of Hon. Ong’ondo Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul Constituency, in an incident that occurred along Ngong Road near City Mortuary, Nairobi.”

On his part, PS Interior Raymond Omollo said that they are going to conduct investigations to unearth what happened.
“I’d want to convey my condolences to the family of Hon Were. This is a very tragic event that has happened this evening. Investigations are ongoing to establish what happened,” said Omollo.
