The third edition of the Nairobi City Marathon has crowned new champions, who have taken home substantial prize money.
Originally scheduled for July 7, the race attracted over 14,000 participants, marking an increase of more than 1,000 from last year.
The races which began at 6:45 am on Sunday, September 8 awarded winners in the full marathon, half marathon, and the 10 km expressway run.
In the 42 km marathon, the winner received Ksh 3,500,000, while the second place took home Ksh 2,250,000, and the third place was awarded Ksh 1,500,000.
For the half marathon (21 km), the winner earned Ksh 150,000, the first runner-up received Ksh 80,000, and the third place was awarded Ksh 50,000.
In the 10 km expressway run, the winner received Ksh 100,000, the second place took home Ksh 60,000, and the third place was awarded Ksh 40,000.
Eliud Magut, who won the 42km race, clocked a time of 2:09:47, followed closely by Josphat Bett with a time of 2:10:01 and Emmanuel Sikuku at 2:10:05.
Cynthia Jerotich emerged tops in women’s 42km after coming home in two hours and 28.2 seconds. Lilian Chebii (2:28:29) and Peris Jerono (2:30:44) were placed second and third respectively.
In the women’s 21km race at the Nairobi City Marathon, Marion Kibor emerged victorious with an impressive time of 1:08:55.
She was followed closely by Gladys Chepkurui, who finished in 1:09:04, and Sharon Kiptugen, who claimed third place with a time of 1:09:27.
Robert Kiprop emerged victorious with a remarkable time of 1:00:56 in the Men’s 21km race.
