The Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, has announced the recruitment of 10,000 police officers in the next financial year to boost security in the country.
Speaking during the Jukwaa La Usalama Nationwide tour in Mombasa County on April 7, 2025, the CS stated that the Ministry of Interior will formulate policies to promote and reward performing security officers.

Further, he warned underperforming police officers, stating that they risk being relieved from their official duties.
During his tour, he addressed issues that involved national security and the government’s efforts to eradicate drug abuse and substance abuse among the youth in Mombasa County.

Murkomen Addresses the Issue of Panga Boys Gang
Interior CS said that the government efforts to eliminate gangs and insecurity cases in Mombasa have been successful because the teamwork and cooperation between security agencies and local leaders.
“Hundreds of members of Panga Boys, a local criminal gang, were arrested last week in an operation run by NPS,” he said.

Further, he issued a stern warning to leaders who have been financing the criminal gangs to stop or face arrest.
In recent reports, police in Kwale County have arrested 120 suspects who belong to the machete-wielding gang “panga boys” who have been terrorizing residents in the county.

Promotion of Chiefs and administrative officers
In his tour he had conversations with elected leaders, top ministry officials, Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, security personnel, community leaders, civil society representatives, youth representatives, and members of the business community.
He announced plans underway to enable promotion, better remuneration and welfare of chiefs and other administrative officers.
The Cabinet Secretary commended the role played by the media in efforts to promote security and safeguard the nation, promising to have a candid conversation with the members of the fourth estate.
