The Nairobi Expressway, which was introduced to ease traffic congestion in the city, stretches from Mlolongo to James Gichuru Road.
Since its establishment, the expressway managed by Moja Expressway Company has attracted a wide range of users, especially those who wish to reach their destinations quickly and conveniently.
This article explains how the Nairobi Expressway charges its customers and the different toll rates applied along various sections of the road.
Nairobi Toll Collection Methods
The Nairobi Expressway operates two toll collection systems: Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) and Manual Toll Collection (MTC).
Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) is designed for vehicles fitted with an On-Board Unit (OBU), allowing non-stop passage through toll stations. The OBU automatically deducts the toll fee from a prepaid account as you pass through the ETC lane.
To use the ETC service, motorists must first visit a Nairobi Expressway Service Centre, such as the one located at Expressway Plaza on Mombasa Road.

You will be required to present your national ID or passport, vehicle logbook, pay a one-time service charge, and purchase a minimum amount of toll points. Once the OBU device is installed, toll fees will be automatically deducted each time you use the expressway.
Your prepaid account can be topped up via the Nairobi Expressway mobile app, USSD code, or other supported digital payment platforms. The ETC system is the most efficient way to use the expressway, as it reduces congestion and saves time.
Manual Toll Collection (MTC), on the other hand, requires motorists to stop at the toll booth and present their payment method. Payment can be made using cash, a pre-loaded MTC card, or mobile money. For mobile money payments, you press the voucher button at the entry station, then use the voucher to complete the payment at the exit point.
Toll Rates and Distance-Based Charges
The expressway uses a distance-based pricing system, meaning the farther you travel, the higher the toll fee. Shorter trips attract lower rates, while longer ones cost more.
