Night Fire Burns Down College Storey Building

A night fire in Kiambu Town destroyed a section of Pettans Technical College (PTC) main campus on Sunday, February 16, 2025.

Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident at 2250hrs.

In the statement, the Agency said a team from the National Police Service (NPS), Kiambu County and its department were working to put out the fire.

“Emergency response teams are battling a fire that broke out near Pettans Technical College in Kiambu. The Kenya Red Cross Action Team, Kenya Police and the County Fire Brigade are on the ground, working to contain it,” Kenya Red Cross said.

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi also confirmed the incident mentioning that the county emergency team were at the scene.

“This evening, a building in Kiambu Town caught fire. The Kiambu County Government’s disaster management unit was deployed to the scene. More updates to follow,” Wamatangi said.

However, the residents criticized the fire department’s slow response. 

They blamed the county government for fire engines arrived to handle the situation with insufficient water.

In videos seen by The Kenya Times, the fire is seen burning down parts of Pettans Plaza which hosts the college campus.

Residents watched from a distance as the firefighting tried to put out the fire.

There are also PSV and buses parked close to the building while others are driving past the scene.

The building is located near Ola Petrol station within the town.

The cause of the fire had been estimated at the time of publishing.

Kenya Red Cross Latest Update

In a subsequent update at 8am on Monday, February 17, Kenya Red Cross said the fire had been contained.

Three who sustained injuries were treated at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.

“The fire was successfully contained, thanks to the efforts of the County Fire teams and partner agencies. Three people were attended to and referred to Kiambu Level 5 Hospital,” the Agency said.

Pettans Technical College

Petanns Technical Colleges is a technical training institution and a subsidiary college of Petanns Driving school and Computer College.

PIBS headquarters is based in Kiambu Town which was on fire.

It has campuses in Limuru Town, Nakuru, Thika towns, Githurai 4S, Ruiru and Kayole.
