Three police officers are recovering from extreme burn wounds after being sprayed with acid by hostile residents while pursuing a suspect in Nairobi’s Ngara area on Monday, November 25.
Media reports indicate that the incident occurred when officers Tom Mbuku, Moses LeLei, and Joyce Otieno were chasing a suspect believed to be transporting stolen drugs from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) to Ngara Medical Centre.
Reportedly, the suspect entered a facility and locked the door from the inside to block the officers’ entry. Despite the officers’ efforts to force open the door while demanding the suspect’s surrender, their attempts were unsuccessful.
Shortly, a lady came out of the facility and laced the three officers with a chemical believed to be acid. Moreover, following the unfortunate incident, a backup team was ferried to the scene and rushed the three officers, who sustained severe injuries on the face and limbs, to Nairobi West Hospital.
In addition, four individuals inside the facility were arrested.

The report stated, “Five litres of suspected sulphuric acid and assorted drugs recovered and kept as evidence.’
Police Officers Being Attacked
Scenes of police officers being attacked have been in the limelight for a while. The incidents have always broken out as the suspects try to resist arrest.
In June 2024, the media reported the arrest of a teenager motorist filmed beating a policeman. In the video that was widely shared the 19-year-old teenager was seen punching and kicking the policeman on the head even after the policeman fell on the ground.

Moreover, the motorist managed to escape after some individuals intervened to assist the officer. This alarming incident has sparked an unusual wave of sympathy for the police, a force often criticized for its history of brutality and corruption.
Additionally, in May 2022, six police officers from the Kondoo police station in Uasin Gishu county were attacked by locals in their attempt to arrest an arson suspect among other cases.
