State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed was forced to apologize after his statement that a youth who met President William Ruto earns a total amount of Ksh150,000 monthly, through online writing.
Hussein Mohamed on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, clarified the claims following an uproar from a section of Kenyans who reacted to his remarks.
The State House spokesperson, while attaching a video of the youth enrolled with the Jitume program sharing his experience with President Ruto at the Kabete National Polytechnic, hailed the program further revealing the lumpsum earned by the youth through online writing.
“Samson Nyamweya earns Ksh150,000 per month through online writing after enrolling with the Jitume program, an initiative that provides the youth with access to digital services, digital skills, and online job opportunities. He shares his experience with President William Ruto,” said Mohamed.
However, Hussein Mohamed’s remarks were not taken lightly by a section of Kenyans who called him out for sharing false information, as the youth in the video quoted a different figure.
Hussein Mohamed Apologizes After Uproar
Following the uproar, the State House spokesperson retracted his statement, further clarifying that he meant $150 per month and not Ksh150,000.
Hussein at the same time asked Kenyans to refrain from escalating the error, claiming that President Ruto has initiated interventions through online jobs that are creating incomes for many.
“Woi! My apologies, folks, I meant $150 per month. Chill out and don’t make a mountain out of a molehill. But at least we all agree that President William Ruto’s interventions are creating incomes for Nyamweya and many more! Have a chill evening!” said Mohamed.

However, Kenyans who were quick to note that his quoted figure was different from the one revealed by the youth, called him out with a majority disturbed by the “lie”.
Arega Michael, a user on X reacted,” He is saying that he earns 40 USD a week – how does that make 150,000 a month?”
Another X user John Ndaiga reacted questioning the figure while also highlighting that the State House spokesperson had posted the evidence but still did not get it right.
“How is $150 per month equivalent to Ksh150,000?? You have posted the evidence and still lie,” he said.
Mwangi George on his part reacted, “Which math did you do to arrive at 150,000 per month, do you know what the dollar exchange rate is? If he gets 160 dollars in 4 weeks, how is it 150,000? this is going too low,”
Youth Explains to Ruto How he Earns Money Online
In a video seen by The Kenya Times (TKT), Samson Nyamweya who claimed to be a Business Administration graduate from the Technical University of Mombasa illustrated to President Ruto how he makes money online.
He said that he has been doing online writing for the past one year and got an opportunity to join the Jitume Training Program in February this year where he was trained on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) generating tools that help him earn approximately of $40 per week.
“I got an opportunity to join the Jitume Training Program in February where I was trained on content writing using AI generating tools. It has made my work easy and helped me earn an approximate of $40 per week, which I can convert to about $150 per month. For the four months since I received this training, I have been in a position to earn approximately $600,” he revealed.

Nyamweya went ahead to show the President how he completes his tasks using AI tools, adding that the finances have been very critical in helping him pay bills.
The Jitume program is one of Kenya Kwanza’s online creative economy flagship initiatives which government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said has been introduced in over 120 TVET institutions nationwide.
According to Mwaura, the initiative is aimed at providing youth with various skills and online jobs that offer weekly earnings.
