The United States Embassy in Nairobi has announced that it will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025.
In a statement dated Friday, August 29, 2025, the Embassy announced that it will shut down its operations on Monday in observance of its country’s Labor Day. “The embassy will be closed on Monday, September 1, in observance of Labor Day,” said the embassy.
The embassy’s closure comes after US President Donald Trump proclaimed September 1, 2025, as Labor Day for Americans and directed all public officials to observe that day with appropriate programs.

About US Labor Day
Additionally, the US embassy oversees the registration of children born abroad to U.S. citizens.

Labor Day honors the American labor movement and the contributions of workers to the country’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.
It serves as a tribute to the achievements of American workers, especially during the Industrial Revolution, when laborers faced long hours, low wages, and unsafe working conditions.
U.S. embassies and consulates generally close their offices on both U.S. federal holidays and the public holidays of the host country. This means their official holiday schedule combines the two. For example, the U.S. Embassy in Kenya observes American holidays, such as Independence Day (July 4), as well as Kenyan holidays, including Madaraka Day (June 1).
