The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has proposed to the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) and the National Council of Elders to dedicate October 10, 2024, as a day for repentance, forgiveness, and redemption.
At the same time, NCIC cited that this is a pivotal moment for both introspection and action. In a press release on October 8, NCIC stated in part, “The IRCK could designate time and space on 10th October for prayer and deep reflection on where we are and where we should be going as a nation.”

“Together, let us embark on this profound journey of soul searching as we envision a future where every Kenyan feels valued, heard, and included. Like the waters of a healing river, our unity can wash away the barriers that divide us,” the commission further stated.
Moreover, NCIC hinted that by coming together in this spirit of reconciliation, we can lay the foundation for a united and harmonious nation.

NCIC on Socio-Political Climate in Kenya
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission has expressed its concern about the prevailing socio-political and economic climate in Kenya.
The Commission has urged the public to reflect on the journey we have had together as a people.
“Let us remember that we have come a long way in the struggle for and since gaining independence. What has been unraveling in the recent past has negatively affected the social fabric and cohesion of society,” NCIC reiterated.
Further, the commission emphasized, “As we navigate a landscape marked by political divisions, social unrest, and economic uncertainty, we must pause and reflect on our collective journey as Kenyans.”
Furthermore, NCIC stressed the significance of reflecting upon the origins of the current challenges. NCIC rhetorically questioned where the rain started to beat us and when the threads that bind us as a nation began to fray.
Despite the prevailing situation, NCIC has called for the public to delve into the roots of our current situation and seek solutions that promote cohesion, unity, healing, and reconciliation.

NCIC’s Call for Unity
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission advocated efforts aimed at nation-building as well as reflecting on the values that unite us.
The Commission further requested the public to recall the words of our Constitution specifically Article 10, which enshrines “national values and principles of governance including patriotism, national unity, sharing and devolution of power, the rule of law, democracy, and participation of the people.”
“This calls us to live up to these ideals, nurture a culture of empathy and understanding, and disallow fear and mistrust to overshadow our shared humanity,” the commission urged.
The commission affirmed that unity is the heartbeat of a thriving society. The Commission admonished for an environment where ideas flow freely nourishing the landscape of our democracy.
“We therefore urge all Kenyans to work together towards building a united Kenya which will be economically prosperous, politically stable and socially cohesive,” the commission requested.
The commission promised to remain committed to promoting national cohesion, integration, and reconciliation.
