The Nigeria High Commission Nairobi has asked members of the public to stop spreading disinformation that their Nationals are killing women in Kenya.
In a statement on January 17, the high commission stated that it was taking note of the channels used for spreading the false information.
According to the statement, members of the public were sharing manipulated footage and social media posts to incriminate Nigerians and pin them to the murders.
“The High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Nairobi is concerned by the preponderance of online blogs, doctored videos and social media posts, maliciously entrenching a spurious speculation that ‘Nigerians’ have perpetrated these heinous crimes,” the statement read in part.
The Commission on Action Against False Information
Consequently, the commission stated that it will take necessary action within the scope of international law against those spreading false information.
Specifically, the statement highlighted the murder of two women reported in the past weeks in Airbnbs in Kenya.
“We wish to implore well-meaning members of the public to desist from disinformation and to refer all enquiries to appropriate channels in order to ascertain accurate information,
“The High Commission is also taking proper note of the channels through which such disinformation is being shared and would like to assure that necessary action, within the scope of international law and extant legal provisions,” added the statement.

Nigeria Gives Advice to its Nationals in Kenya
At the same time, Nigerians in Kenya have been advised to be respectable members of the public and avoid unnecessary movements as investigations into the cases continue.
The high commission also asked Nigerians in Kenya to continue being law abiding and respectable citizens.
“Conscious of some reports of sporadic attacks on Nigerian nationals, it has become important for the Nigeria High Commission to urge all Nigerians in Kenya to remain calm and to continue to be law-abiding and respectable members of the public.
“However, Nigerians are advised to be vigilant and to avoid unnecessary movements even as investigations are ongoing and formal communication from the host law enforcement authorities are awaited,” added the statement.

DCI on Murders
The statement came as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continues with investigations into the matter including the gruesome murder of Rita Waeni whose body was found dumped in Roysambu.
The Detectives been investigating various aspects of the case, focusing on a man spotted in CCCTV footage while collecting keys from a shop close to the room where Rita Waeni was found dead.
The family of Waeni disclosed on January 17, that the killer demanded Ksh500,000 as ransom prior to the news about her death.
