The National Police Service (NPS) has dismissed as fake a viral document circulating on social media purporting to contain a list of newly appointed Officers Commanding Stations (OCSs) in Nairobi.
In a statement shared through its official social media platforms on Tuesday, the service flagged the document with a prominent “FAKE” stamp, warning members of the public not to treat its contents as authentic.
The document, titled “Re: Appointment of Nairobi OCSs,” listed dozens of police stations within Nairobi and the names of officers allegedly appointed to lead them.
The list quickly attracted attention online, with some social media users claiming it showed a pattern in the appointments.
Circulation of the document sparked debate and speculation across digital platforms, prompting the police service to intervene and clarify its position.
NPS Rejects Viral Document
While the NPS dismissed the document as fake, its circulation came amid heightened speculation over possible police transfers and deployments following recent changes within the service.
In April 2026, the Nairobi Central Sub-County Police Commander was transferred in what was described as a mini reshuffle.

Reports also indicated that the Central Police Station OCS was moved, signaling that personnel changes were taking place within Nairobi police units.
In July 2026, the National Police Service announced a major reorganization that created five new police units and expanded the Inspector-General’s powers to reorganize formations, units and components within the service.
Such reforms naturally led to expectations of more transfers and deployments.
Earlier reshuffles involving regional commanders, spokespersons and other senior officers had also reinforced the perception that additional changes could follow.
The circulation of fake official documents can have legal consequences under Kenyan law, particularly where such documents are forged, used to mislead the public, damage reputations or cause public unrest.
Depending on the circumstances, those responsible may face charges related to forgery, publication of false information, falsification of documents or cyber-related offenses.
Authorities have in the past warned the public against creating or sharing fake government documents presented as authentic communications.
How OCS’s are Appointed
An Officer Commanding Station (OCS) is the officer in charge of a police station and serves as the lowest level of command within the National Police Service’s station hierarchy.

The OCS is responsible for the overall management of the station, including supervision of officers, allocation of duties, maintenance of discipline, management of police cells, security of exhibits and firearms, crime prevention, response to incidents and implementation of directives from higher command.
The officer also oversees investigations conducted within the station, community policing programs, public complaints, occurrence books, movement of officers and the day-to-day administration of police operations within the station’s jurisdiction.
As the head of the station, the OCS is answerable to the Sub-County Police Commander and other senior officers within the command structure.
To qualify for station command, an officer must have attained the requisite rank, possess adequate operational and administrative experience and maintain a satisfactory service record.
Various factors, including performance, disciplinary history, leadership ability, special training and the security demands of a particular area, may be considered before deployment.
Appointment of OCSs is an internal administrative function carried out by the National Police Service through transfers and deployments.
Unlike public appointments, the process is undertaken within the police chain of command, with officers receiving formal deployment orders before assuming duties at a station.
Depending on operational requirements, OCSs can be transferred, promoted or redeployed to other assignments within the service.
Because OCSs exercise direct command over police stations and oversee policing at the grassroots level, changes involving multiple station commanders can have a significant impact on security operations, personnel management and service delivery within the affected areas.
