A man believed to be a police officer was captured firing shots at a student’s house during a night house party near the University of Nairobi’s Kikuyu campus.

In a viral video seen by The Kenya Times, the man armed with a G 3 rifle was seen firing shots, allegedly to force the students to open the door.

After struggling to open the door, the officer moved to the window, opened it, and fired a shot inside.

In the video, the words “Fungua, chini, inua mkono, nitakuamsha na makofi” were clearly audible.

When asked for comment, National Police Service Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the allegations had yet to be verified, terming the reports “assumptions and hypotheses as of this moment”.

“The allegation(s) put forward have to be VERIFIED before a comment is issued,” Muchiri responded.

Kenyans React After the Video Circulated Online

The video has sparked outrage among Kenyans, with some criticizing President William Ruto’s government for continued cases of police brutality and unchecked excesses.

Kenyan blogger Edgar Obare took to his X account to criticize the police, questioning how an officer could justify firing live shots inside a student’s house during a night party.

“A firearm is not a tool for breaking up a party. One stray bullet could have cost a young life. If there was disorder, there were lawful ways to handle it. Pulling the trigger inside a residential space shows a frightening abuse of power,” he added.

On the other hand, Brian Makana (@brianinnbo) described the incident as a clear abuse of power, condemning the use of live bullets at a student party.

“Hii ni abuse of power tupu. Live bullets kwa student party? That’s reckless endangerment. We cannot accept this. Our youth deserve protection, not bullets,” he commented.

A pundit, @Morara_F, tweeted, “It’s because they know that they will get away with it.”

Other Instances of Police Engaging with University Students

In 2024, another viral video surfaced showing a group of police officers, armed with teargas guns and batons, attacking students.

In footage reviewed by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the officers were seen hitting and striking the students before dragging one to a spot where a canister was released near him.

Fortunately, the male student managed to move just in time to avoid the canister detonating in his face.

Trevor was seen limping and favoring his left leg, indicating he likely needed medical attention.

The Commission condemned the alleged brutality inflicted on Trevor Mureithi, a student at Multimedia University.

KNCHR stated that the police officers should have shown humanity, assessed his condition, and responded appropriately, but instead, they continued their actions, causing further injuries that resulted in his hospitalization.

It recommended immediate investigations, urging the Inspector General of Police to look into the actions that led to this incident.

Additionally, the Commission said that the National Police Service should take administrative action, hold the officers involved accountable, and ensure they face the full force of the law.

It also called on the service to take full responsibility for Trevor’s medical care as a form of reparations for the victim.
