Pain, Anguish as Parents of Maseno University Student Who Was Shot Dead Speak

Miss Everline Miruka last spoke to her son William Mayenga on Monday, March 13 when she sent her pocket money.

She promised to send him more in the following days not knowing that was the last conversation they would have.

A week later, On Monday, March 20, William,21, a student of literature at Maseno University lost his life after joining fellow students in the Azimio demos when a stray bullet hit fired by an anti-riot police officer hit him on the neck just a few metres from the university gate.

He was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead upon arrival. “I was shocked by the news. At first, they lied to me that my son was still alive only to reach the hospital and find him lying dead,” William’s mother told The Daily Nation.

A teacher of English at Emaruba Primary School in Vihiga County, Miss Miruka expected William to graduate in 2024 and be a teacher like herself and his father Joash Bangi Mayienga who teaches Mathematics at Birongo Secondary School in Nyamira County.

When Mayenga was informed of William’s death, he was so shaken and distraught that his brother-in-law had to drive him from Keroka in Kisii County to Coptic Hospital Mortuary in Kisumu where his son’s body lay.

“I spoke with my son last Friday and he was in a jovial mood only to receive the bad news on Monday evening,” William’s father said.
