A plane was forced to make an emergency landing after its pilot tragically passed away in the cockpit mid-air.
According to Turkish Airlines, Captain Ilcehin Pehlivan was preparing for takeoff on a scheduled flight from Seattle to Istanbul, when he suddenly became unwell.
Moments later, he is reported to have fainted in the cockpit.
Crew members and airport medical staff rushed to provide assistance, but despite their best efforts, Captain Ilcehin Pehlivan was pronounced dead shortly after.
Consequently, the copilot was forced to make an emergency landing at New York JFK Airport.
“The Captain Pilot of our Airbus 350 type aircraft with the tail registration TC-LGR, operating flight number TK204 from Seattle to Istanbul, İlçehin PEHLİVAN, fainted during the flight.
“When the first medical intervention to our captain on the plane was ineffective, the cockpit crew consisting of 1 captain and 1 co-pilot decided to make an emergency landing, but our captain lost his life before landing,” airline spokesman Yahya Ustun wrote in part.

Emergency Protocols for Planes
The Aviation industry has strict medical fitness standards, requiring pilots to regularly undergo health checks to ensure they’re fit to fly.
Pilots have to pass medical exams that vary depending on their age, flight hours, and physical condition.
For instance, those under 40 usually have to complete medical evaluations once a year, while pilots over 40 may need to have them twice a year.
These tests focus on key areas like cardiovascular health and mental well-being—anything that could affect their ability to safely operate an aircraft.
Moreover, pilots are trained to handle a variety of emergencies, including health-related issues. Airlines are also equipped with first-aid kits, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and oxygen supplies on board.
In cases where a captain becomes incapacitated, co-pilots or first officers are trained to take control of the flight.
