Samburu County Police Commander Thomas Ototo confirmed the incident on Tuesday, February 11.
Reports indicated that the gang seized the killed officer’s gun with 30 bullets during their escape.
The officer who died was part of a group of police officers who were escorting a group of remandees from Maralal GK Prisons in an official car when they came under attack by gunmen on Monday, February 10.
Police Officer Killed in Ambush as Eight Suspects Escape
Authorities reported that officers from Baragoi Police Station had collected eight remandees from the prison and were transporting them to the station in preparation for court proceedings scheduled for February 11 when the attack took place.
It is also reported that the deceased was in the company of other two other police officers at the time of attack who scampered for safety after they were ambushed by their attackers.
The body of the slain officer was moved to Baragoi Sub-County Hospital Morgue pending an autopsy.

According to the police, no arrest had been made regarding the incident but a manhunt for the gunmen had been launched by the time of publishing this article.
The suspects who escaped are reportedly facing charges such as defilement and possession of illegal firearms.
The escape of remandees in Samburu came just days after a similar incident on Saturday, January 25, 2025, when eight prisoners escaped from Wundanyi Prison.

According to authorities, the prisoners, aged between 18 and 39, were facing serious charges, including rape, defilement, sexual assault, and housebreaking.
They reportedly escaped from Ward 3 by cutting through the iron sheets on the rooftop at around 11:30 p.m.

It remains unclear how all eight suspects managed to evade the guards during the prison break. Law enforcement agencies appealed to the public for any information that could assist in locating the escaped prisoners.
The Authorities assured the public that they were making every effort to recapture the inmates and urged anyone with credible information to report it to the nearest police station.
