Police Reveal How Prisoners Escaped at Night

Police officers and prison wardens in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County have revealed how eight prisoners escaped from Wundanyi Prison on the night of Saturday, January 25, 2025.

The escapees have been identified as Patrick Karisa, Erickson Mwachofi, Alex Makexi, Edward Maighasho, Robert Muchugwa, Mwangemi Mwanyange, Joseph Kalama, and Samuel Onyango.

According to authorities, the prisoners, aged between 18 and 39, were facing charges ranging from rape, defilement, and sexual assault to housebreaking.

They reportedly escaped through the rooftop of Ward 3 by cutting through the iron sheets at about 11:30 p.m.

Police Message to Kenyans After Wundanyi Prison Break

However, it is not clear how all eight suspects managed to bypass the guards during the prison break.

Law enforcement agencies have appealed to the public to share any information that may help in locating the prisoners.

Authorities have assured the public that every effort is being made to recapture the prisoners and urged anyone with credible information to report it to the nearest police station.

Collins Jumaisi’s Case

The incident comes months after thirteen suspects escaped from Gigiri police station. 

Among the escapees was the prime suspect in Kware dumpsite murders Collins Jumaisi alongside 12 Eritreans on August 20, 2024.

DCI Director Mohamed Amin said officers at the station learnt of the escape while they were serving morning tea to the suspects. 

They cut a wire mesh that formed part of security to the cells and scaled a perimeter wall before disappearing.

DCI promised a cash reward to anyone who provides information leading to the murder suspect’s rearrest.

Kisii Incident

Additionally, four other prisoners escaped from Magena Police Station in Kisii in December 2024.

The escapees broke out of the station by smashing the wooden door of their cell.

According to police reports, one of the prisoners allegedly used a piece of the broken door frame to strike a guard on the forehead, causing injuries, before fleeing with the others.

The injured officer alerted the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) and reported that the prisoners had overpowered him and escaped.

The prisoners were in custody on charges of assault and drug possession.
