Senior Principal Magistrate of the Milimani Law Courts has released the five police officers accused of aiding the escape of 13 inmates from the Gigiri Police Station.
Martha Nanzushi granted the officers Ksh200,000 bond each and instructed them to report to the investigating officer twice a week.
Ronald Babo, Evans Kipkirui, Mollent Achieng, Zachary Nyabuto, and Gerald Mutuku appeared in court in connection with the disappearance of 12 Eritrean nationals and Collins Jumaisi, the prime suspect in multiple murders of women whose bodies were found in Kware, Nairobi.
Acting Police Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli confirmed that eight officers faced interdiction following the incident.
Police Involvement
Masengeli suggested that the escape might have been planned by some officers stationed there.
“Our preliminary investigations indicate that insiders aided the escape, given that officers were properly deployed to guard the station. As a result, I have interdicted eight officers who were on duty last night,” he said.
He said among those interdicted include the Gigiri Sub County Police Commander, OCS Gigiri Police Station, Duty Officer, Duty NCO, Station Guards and Report Office Personnel.
Masengeli announced a manhunt to re-arrest the escapees and urged anyone with information, particularly about Collins Jumaisi Kalusha, to report to the nearest police station or call the hotlines: 999, 112, 911, and 0800 722 203.
The 12 others are Eritreans detained at the police station for overstaying in the country illegally.
A police report filed at the station, under OB 05/20/08/2024, indicated that the matter was reported by police officers Evans Kipkirui and Gerald Mutuku who were manning the cells.
