Fresh details have emerged regarding how Kware murder suspect Collins Jumaisi and 12 other suspects escaped from Gigiri Police Station on the morning of Tuesday, August 20.
Reports indicate that the suspects simply walked out of the station’s main door while under the watch of two police officers on night shift duty.
The two police officers, the cell sentry and the duty officer, are now at the center of investigations for allegedly aiding the detainees in their escape.
Investigators revealed that a suspect arrested for fraud and booked in the cells on that fateful night stated that the detainees did not escape by cutting the wire mesh at the jail cells’ basking bay, as had initially been suspected.
Witness Recounts How Collins Jumaisi & the Eritreans Escaped
The suspect who witnessed the escape said he was brought to the cells at around 9pm that same night and allowed by officers to keep some money he had.
He also noted that around midnight, the duty officer conducted a roll call, after which he left the cell doors unlocked. This careless act provided Jumaisi and the other detainees with the perfect opportunity to escape.

The witness further revealed that when he arrived at the cells, he found all the suspects, including Khalusha, in the corridor outside their cell cubes.
Collins Jumaisi had already been unchained, and the door to his cell cube had been opened, allowing him access to the corridor.
The handcuffs that had been used to restrain him were found abandoned in his cell, with the suspect nowhere to be seen.
Police Allegedly Received Bribe
Additionally, the witness claimed he saw one of the Eritrean detainees handing money to the two police officers before they announced they were heading to the canteen.
The witness also alleged that one of the officers appeared to be drunk. Insiders at the station confirmed that there is a corporal known for reporting to duty while intoxicated.
With the two officers away, the 13 suspects seized the opportunity to walk to their freedom through the report desk and vanished into the darkness.

It was until Tuesday, at around 5:00 a.m., when the officer in charge, Police Constable Gerald Mutuku, made a routine visit to the cells with the canteen manager to serve breakfast to the suspects.
When they opened the cell door, they were shocked to discover that the 13 suspects had escaped, allegedly by cutting the wire mesh at the basking bay.
Adding to the controversy, Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli had previously stated that the station is strategically located, making it difficult for an inmate to escape.
He mentioned that all cells are surrounded by a wall; to the east are police quarters, and to the west is a diplomatic police station that shares the compound.
Since the station is located near the Gigiri UN offices, next to the High Commission of India and the US Embassy, the security level in the area is always high.
