Popular Nollywood Actor Amaechi Muonagor is Dead

Popular Nollywood actor, Amaechi Muonagor passed away on Sunday March 24, due to kidney related complications, diabetes and stroke.

A week before his death, the Nollywood veteran reached out to the public to appeal for funds to undergo a kidney transplant.

In a video that surfaced online, the actor could hardly speak, and his friend Orji took over to explain the actor’s predicament.

“It has not been easy. He has been in this condition for months now and wants to go for a kidney transplant. He just came back from the ICU a couple of days ago and is responding to treatment but not very well,” Orji explained.

“We decided to bring him home because there was no money, but it is not advisable. He barely talks well. Please, he needs your help.”

Battle with Sickness

The Nollywood actor known for his role as the father of two troublesome teenage boys the ‘Aki and Paw Paw’ Nigerian comedy movie took a break from the scenes of acting in 2016 when he began battling with diabetes.

His cousin Tony Muonagor also known as Tony Oneweek while confirming his demise revealed that the actor suffered a stroke in 2023 rendering him partially paralyzed.

“For 2023, e suffer from one stroke wey lead to partial paralysis of im left leg,” Tony told BBC.

This translates to, ‘in 2023, he suffered stroke which led to partial paralysis of his left leg’.

Career and Accolades

Amaechi began his acting career 1989 and appeared in several movies such as taboo, Karishika and Igodo even though he is mostly remembered for his role starring alongside Osita Iheme and Chinedu Ikedieze in the films Aki na Ukwa and Two Rats.

The veteran actor first worked for the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

However, after completing his Youth Service in 1989 Amaechi left his job at the news agency and ventured into acting where he had his debut role as Akunatakasi in “Taboo 1,”

Other than acting, the Nollywood veteran was also a talented producer.

During his years in the industry, the 61-year-old was nominated for the 2017 (Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) Best Actor in Comedy.

About Amaechi Muonagor

Muonagor was born on August 20, 1962 in Idemili, Anambra State, Nigeria.

He attended St. Mary’s Primary School, Obosi, Oraifite Grammar School. Thereafter, he joined University of Nigeria to study education and Nsukka (UNN) where he studied economics and graduated in 1987.

Amaechi has left behind his wife Hope Chikodi and four children.

Condolences have poured in from all over the world as his fans remember him for his versatility and masterful performances.

Nigerian Actors who Died

Muonagor’s death has come barely three weeks after the world was woken up to the devastating news of John Okafor’s alias Mr Ibu’s death.

Mr Ibu had been ailing for a while and consequently got his leg amputated in a bid to save his life.

Another Nigerian actor who passed away is Cynthia Okereke who took her final breath in 2023, almost a year after she was abducted alongside colleague Clemson Cornel while filming in Enugu.

She died after a long battle with High blood pressure and diabetes.

Similarly, Saint Obi died on May 8, 2023, in Plateau state after suffering from a protracted ailment. He was known for his role Sakobi the snake girl movies.
